CORSAGE was
founded in 2003 by a small number of PhD students from Delft,
Twente, Wageningen and Maastricht.
Within the
'social aspects of genomics' research several PhD students has
started their projects. The Centre for Society and Genomics not
formally founded yet, no platform for discussion and
contemplation existed. Informal contacts were formalized when
CORSAGE was founded.
About a year later CORSAGE was
incorporated into
GeNeYouS,
uniting social sciences and humanities with natural sciences.

Mission
CORSAGE wishes to heighten awareness in the wider research
community of genomics and in society, concerning societal issues
in genomics. Furthermore, CORSAGE wishes to sensitize and
educate professionals in the field of genomics, whether
researchers, policy-makers or related communities, about social
and societal issues in genomics.
By granting social sciences a prominent place in CORSAGE,
societal issues are to be viewed from multiple perspectives such
as Science and Technology Studies, Philosophy and History of
Science, Innovation Studies, Consumer Studies, etc. Central in
the approaches social sciences take is the balance between
skeptic/critic views and positive views towards genomics
applications and towards the technology itself. Furthermore an
important role is reserved for reflexivity towards the own
research.
