Expectations:
At CSIRO Livestock Industries, Queensland Bioscience Precinct, St Lucia the research focusses on the specialised areas of microbial genomics and metagenomics and how they relate to improving our understanding of gut function and health.
Metagenomics is a new field combining molecular biology and genetics in an attempt to identify, and characterise the genetic material from environmental samples. The host-microbe association - how the microbe functions in the environment – is highly relevant to the function and well-being of all living organisms.
The research aims to produce a range of practical outcomes for the livestock sector such as lowering animal greenhouse gas emissions and improving feed resource use, and reducing the use of antibiotics. This project is part of the Preventative Health National Research Flagship to develop its research portfolio in gut health.

Expectations:
Expectations of GeNeYouS/CORSAGE are as broad as they are flexible. First and foremost, I hope, expect and will personally strive for, a level of integration between natural and social sciences (and the humanities) with respect to the genomic sciences, for the world is not all molecules and genes. Bridging these "two cultures" requires a lot of contact, effort, work and good-will and the participation of both groups, in order to provide a clear and stable common ground for cooperation.
CORSAGE is not a group of "social facilitators", preparing society for genomics. Far more, it studies genomic research and society, out of curiosity and to see if there are any mismatches. GeNeYouS is both a site for research, as a site for contemplation and reflection this way. However, no reflection is unidirectional, thus I ask of all the natural scientists to join in, no, to dive in.
