Horizon programme: new subsidy programme for research in Genomics and Biomolecular Informatics
For (young) researchers with visionary and innovative ideas
The strategic plan of the Netherlands Genomics Initiative stipulates that it provides for the development of a research programme that must serve as a breeding ground for the talent of the future with regard to research into the fields of Genomics and Biomolecular Informatics (BMI).
This research programme, known as the Horizon programme, aims to promote and coordinate outstanding and visionary fundamental research into Genomics and/or BMI.
The programme is especially aimed at young researchers which are tomorrow’s project leaders, but in general the focus is on innovative ideas in the fields of genomics and bioinformatics.
The Horizon Breakthrough projects form the first phase of the Horizon Programme. The purpose of Horizon Breakthrough projects is to determine whether the ideas put forward by innovative (young) researchers are actually feasible.
So if you have a PhD degree and you have been walking around for some time now with a fantastic plan or idea in the field of Genomics and Biomolecular Informatics, but haven’t (yet) had an opportunity to carry out a proof-of-concept test, then this is your chance!
The project should concern a short-term project, with a duration of 1 – 1 ˝ years. More specifically, this means that researchers in fixed employment can apply for a WP (post-doc) or NWP (technician) position.
Researchers with a short term employment contract (postdocs) can request funding for their own position or a NWP (technician) position. In 2003 there are two subsidy rounds; deadlines are May 1st and November 1st.
In 2004 there will also be two rounds. Results from the Horizon Breakthrough projects can form the preliminary research for new applications in the Horizon programme or elsewhere.
Besides the Horizon Breakthrough projects, this programme also comprises the Horizon Fellowships, to be followed in a later phase by the Horizon Projects.
Horizon Fellowships are intended for work periods abroad by Dutch researchers for a maximum of 1 year and can requested at any time during the programme.
The first call for the third component of this programme, the Horizon Projects, will be made in mid 2004. These projects are of a larger scale than the Horizon Breakthrough projects and should have the inherent potential to germinate an international research group.
