Old&NewNo, this is not a bad translation from Dutch to English. Instead it's a good reflection of what is happening within GeNeYouS at the moment. The 'old' GeNeYouS will not remain, that is, from the General Assembly in March on, GeNeYouS will have a new face. 'New' board members will replace some 'old' ones. However the old mission - providing a platform for young genomics scientists - will not be lost. Also the transition from network in progress to network in action - started in the past year - will come to completion in 2005. It's time to leave the old era, let's step into a new one.The GeNeYouS Board, Simon Mooijaart (Chairman) Mirre de Noo (Secretary) Ilona Kars (Cashier) David Lutje Hulsik (Education) Wilbert Heijne (Interaction) Christine Bunthof (Internationalisation) Tim Hulsen (Internet) Terry Vrijenhoek (PR) |
Broaden your career horizonAs a member of GeNeYouS you have the chance to visit the Bio Career Event with 33% discount fee. This life sciences career event - taking place 12th May 2005 at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht - gives M.Sc. and Ph.D. students and postdocs insight in their career perspectives in life sciences. It also provides perfect opportunities - like a job fair, company presentations and job interviews - for them to get in touch with their future employers. Among these are pharmaceutical companies, biotechnological companies and research institutes. In plenary sessions several keynote speakers - such as the research director of Organon and the CEO of OctoPlus - display the career perspectives within their companies. Each participant also receives the Bio Career Guide, which includes profiles of various employers in the life sciences sector. Visit http://www.biocareerevent.nl for more information and registration. |
Workshop - Gene NetworksAfter you've come over all Christmas and New Year drinks, it's time to get back to business. You can start on 18th January 2005 with a workshop on Gene Networks. In collaboration with the Department of Medical Informatics of the Erasmus MC of Rotterdam GeNeYouS has organised this 3-hour workshop. From their office in Rotterdam gene network experts Rob Jelier and Barend Mons will learn you all about intelligent data mining. Only the 20 first subscribers can participate, so look for more information and register soon at the website. |
GeNeYouS goes BritainThe organization of the study trip to the UK is in full progress. The program of this six-day experience is now available on the GeNeYouS website. Among the visited institutes are the University of London, the EBI and Sanger Institute in Cambridge and the John Innes Institute in Norwich. There's still a few places left, so mark 5th till 12th June and register online. |
Make yourself knownGeNeYouS is working on a career opportunities website in collaboration with BioASP, the Netherlands' bioinformatics web portal. This website will be open for young bioinformatics researchers and will attract a lot of potential employers. Part of this website will contain a job matching platform. Bioinformatics researchers can put up their profile here, as can companies. If you're interested in finding the job of your dreams through this website, please let us know by sending an email with your resume to the education committee. |
BIOPOPFrom 1st January 2005 GeNeYouS will officially start working on BIOPOP. This is a research project to analyze the effectiveness of science communication of young biotechnology researchers. It is carried out under the Sixth Framework Program (FP6) of the European Union. Project leader Francesco Lescai (ANBI) has set up a consortium of 7 partners (of which GeNeYouS is one) to carry out BIOPOP. The basis of this research project consists of two town square public communication events - one in Italy and the other in the Netherlands - where research questions will be analyzed. GeNeYouS is responsible for the organization of the event in the Netherlands, which takes place in March 2006. If you want more information about BIOPOP or if you would like to help in the organization, please contact Terry Vrijenhoek at pr@geneyous.nl. |
Bring your data to lifeOn 30th November 2004 the first Collaborative Event Bioinformatics took place in Utrecht, and members of GeNeYouS were there. Not with a stand, not with a presentation, but as participants to get in touch with important players in bioinformatics. At this event - organised by SenterNovem - universities, knowledge institutes and companies presented themselves. By means of lectures, round table discussions, and a plenary discussion they worked jointly towards solutions for the increasing data information flow. Especially for bioinformaticians looking for a next career step this was a good opportunity to play themselves in the picture. |
