General AssemblyEducation's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open oneThe next General Assembly is planned October 27. Before the general meeting, a workshop will be given by dr. ir. Frank van den Berg. Frank van den Berg is a docent at the University of Twente at the Organization, Operation and Human resource department. Next to several courses, he provides education and training in the area of communication and coordination. If you are interested in coordinating groups, he is the man to listen to! In 3 hours he will discuss several aspects of this topic, like coping with obstinate people, discussing, conflicts, the essence of communication and more. Only 20 lucky people can attend to this workshop, so hurry to subscribe yourself. After this workshop, you can cast your vote in the general assembly. Every member of GeNeYouS is vigorously invited to speak out his ideas and opinions! This event will take place in the Leiden University Medical Center, room J1-128, and will start at 13:30. GeNeYouS Café: Intelligent about design1st GeNeYouS Café is a great success!
Last September 22, the intelligent young researchers from GeNeYouS gathered together in an attractive in Café Lofen, beneath the “Dom” in Utrecht to discuss the recent fuzz about Intelligent Design, ID. Free drinks, delicious tapas and even a personal bartender contributed to the philosophical ambience that unfolded in the faint-lighted room. Three excellent experts made sure that there was a lively discussion. Not so much on whether ID is true or false, but more about how young researchers as we are should “deal with ID”. This event marked the very first of a series of GeNeYouS Cafés, set up to connect the over 500 members of our network. And in fact, it was a very successful and fun one! If you would like to exchange thoughts, fun and drinks with other young researchers in your field, and meanwhile learning some interesting things about life science aspects, be sure you keep aware of the upcoming 2nd GeNeYouS Café, in January, again in Café Lofen in Utrecht. This time, we will try a bite of Functional Foods. We will keep you notified.

Genomics Momentum – Young Researchers ProgramGenomic future in HealthAfter the success of last year, GeNeYouS organized two interesting workshops during the afternoon program of the Genomics Momentum. Despite the promising number of subscribers, there was a disappointing number of participants. The quality of the workshops was however far from disappointing. The workshop, given by dr. Gerrit-Jan Lievers from the NKI-AvL, was an enthralling presentation of molecular decision making in colorectal cancer. It covered the possible application of genomic research on the different choices that have to be made in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of colorectal cancer. The workshop led to an interesting discussion concerning the ethics of medicine retailing and the function of research in medicine development. The workshop about disease and nutrition started with a presentation of Prof. dr. W. Saris. Professor Saris works at DSM and gave us insight in the severity of obesity and the role of genomics in this new disease. Obesity is one of the major problems of modern time causing several of other diseases like diabetes and heartfailure. The search for genetic mechanisms in the development of obesity is a hot topic. The second talk was given by dr. K. Grimaldi. He works for Sciona. His company is an internationally recognized pioneer and leader in the emerging scientific field of nutrigenetics. Sciona utilizes genetics to aid companies in developing more effective, individually formulated products that may help consumers live healthier lives. Sciona also directly supplies individuals with the information they may need, based on their own DNA, to adapt their diet and lifestyle to manage their risk for certain diseases. After the two presentations, the participants had to discuss their statement on nutrigenomics in a group. After the conversations, the workshop was ended by a group discussion to get an overview on the general thoughts of nutrigenomics. |
YELS-Net / GeNeYouS AfterpartyYoung researchers met young entrepreneursThe first meeting between GeNeYous and YELSNet was a success. The two networks joined up to organize a very pleasant afterparty in restaurant Gember, after a stimulating Genomics Momentum. A group of 35 enthusiastic participants eagerly evolved there network, while enjoying a tasteful dinner. The informal evening offered plenty of opportunities to meet each other in a very open and honest atmosphere, perfect for the exchange of information and ideas. YELSNet coordinator Willem Jan Bosma and GeNeYous chairman Mirre de Noo introduced the two networks to each other. Their presentations were followed by Wietse Mulder, with an enthusiast presentation of his quite fresh company “Genome Diagnostics.” It was recognized that both networks (and some of) there activities could support each other. The participants experienced this first acquaintance as a success. Hopefully, we are able to strengthen the contact in the future.
Course Genes, Genomics and Genetics: The Social Perspective in EdinburghExpand your knowledge about social perspectives on genomics abroad‘Genes, Genomics and Genetics: The Social Perspective’ is the title of a short course, organised by the UK Genomics Forum and the Centre for Society and Genomics (CSG) in Edinburgh, 21-23 November 2005. The course will provide an introduction to some of the main social scientific approaches and perspectives on issues raised by genomic science; and provoke discussion and reflection on the social, ethical and political contexts and consequences of genomic science. Included in the course are lectures by internationally renowned social scientists, group discussions, poster sessions, film analyses and an excursion to the Roslin institute (where Dolly the sheep was cloned). Students obtain a course certificate equal to 1 ECTS. Young scientists (PhD or Post doc) working in the field of life sciences working at a Dutch University or Research Institute can apply. Participants will pay a (limited) fee of € 200,-, covering transport, accommodation and lunches. CSG will select candidates based on their motivation and based on a proper mix of researchers from the health, nutrition and industrial fermentation & environment domain. Closing date for applications is the 3th of November. For further information visit the CSG website or contact Jeanine Lagendijk. |
Corsage/GeNeYouS Winter-symposiumGenomics and Society: Chances for true love?Corsage, in corporation with GeNeYouS and PFGS Benelux, organizes a winter-symposium, December 16. The winter symposium offers PhD students the opportunity to discuss their (ongoing or unfinished) work in the wider area of ‘Genomics and Society.’ 25 Seats are available for the winter symposium and most of the attendants will have the opportunity to present their own work. More information will follow in future newsletters. For a first peek, please go here.
